Modern Techniques
When lightsaber combat is required in RP, we make use of duels. We have rules for such duels <here>. We refer to this as the “modern lightsaber techniques” in character. In any event, this will be the standard
Classical Techniques
We also have a tradition for fully emoted lightsaber combat as well. In character, we refer to this as the “classical lightsaber techniques”. As it may take considerable time to learn, as well as teach, it is no longer required to progress your character. Nevertheless, it can be good for a bit of fun to use the old forms. Our style of lightsaber emotes describes what is done by the character, so that is clear to even someone completely unfamiliar with lightsaber forms. While each of the forms is restricted by the form’s arsenal of techniques and style, this also gives each form its unique flavour and personality. Anyone can begin to learn Form I: Shii-Cho, which is the starting point from where you get familiar with the emoting style.
Grade: Everyone has their own ‘grade’, for lack of a better word, in classical lightsaber combat. The website will indicate the highest form characters have passed an exam in. This may mean they’re already studying the next form. If the website lists the character as “Form I: Shii-Cho”, chances are they are looking into practicing Form II: Makashi. All enclave members may study Shii-Cho, because only a training lightsaber is required for it. From Form II: Makashi onwards, a lightsaber is required. Wielding two lightsabers or a double-bladed lightsaber falls under the advanced lightsaber forms, which come after Form VI: Niman. You’re free to use any form in emote combat that your character has been formally trained in.
Forum Access: The text on Form I: Shii-Cho is publically accessible and will remain so. The texts on the higher forms are restricted. They are unlocked to any enclave members that pass all exams for the relevant tier. Please report passed form exams so that the website (and access privileges) may be kept up to date.
Instruction: You may ask for instruction in the classical lightsaber forms in character. Formal lessons can be given by anyone, who has passed the exam for the lightsaber form that you seek instruction in. (See the current list of instructors below) Of course, having passed an exam for Form III then automatically means the character has also already passed exams on Form II and Form I.
It can also be a good idea (not to mention fun) to spar with enclave members that are studying the same form, to get in some practice. Keep in mind that it can take a while to grasp any of the forms; and lessons may take much time.
Exam: The forms are taught in a numerical sequence from Form I: Shii-Cho through to Form VI: Niman. Before moving on to the next form, your character has to pass an exam on the current form. During the exam, your character’s competence in the form is tested. This includes the form’s history, techniques and its unique style. Exams are given by other practicioners of the old forms, regardless of rank. They must have passed the exam for the form above it, themselves. (Someone who has passed their Form II: Makashi exam can give Form I: Shii-Cho exams)
